Maharashtra's oldest wild heart
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is the largest and oldest national park in Maharashtra. Spread across 625 square
kilometres of dry deciduous forest, it sits in the Chandrapur district - a land of teak, bamboo, and open meadows
that slope into deep valleys and rocky cliffs.
The reserve holds one of India's densest tiger populations. Over 90 Bengal tigers move through this forest. Leopards
hunt in the shadows. Sloth bears shuffle through the undergrowth. Marsh crocodiles drift in Tadoba Lake. Nearly 200
species of birds call through the canopy at dawn.
The name comes from Taru, a village chief who legend says fought a tiger by the lake and was deified by the local
Gond tribes. His shrine still stands beneath a tree on the water's edge.

A day in the wild
Dawn
Morning safari
You head out at first light in an open-top gypsy. The forest wakes slowly - alarm
calls from langurs, pugmarks in the dust, the low growl of a sambar stag. Your
naturalist reads every sign.
Midday
Rest and recharge
Return to your lodge. A slow meal, shade, and the sound of the forest pressing in
from all sides. Some lodges sit right at the tree line - the wild never quite leaves
you.
Afternoon
Evening safari
The second drive starts as the heat breaks. Tigers come to the waterholes.
Leopards begin their patrols. The light turns golden and the forest opens up in
the last hour before dusk.
