The jungle that inspired Kipling
Pench Tiger Reserve straddles Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra — the 19th reserve formed under Project Tiger in November 1992. The sanctuary itself dates to 1977, spanning 449.39 square kilometres of forest. The National Park, now renamed Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park, was carved out in 1983.
The reserve holds 115 tigers and 151 leopards — among them the elusive black leopard. Sloth bears, dhole, and Indian gaur move through forests that shelter 62 mammal species, 291 birds, 9 amphibians, 34 reptiles, and 174 species of butterflies.
This is the real ground of The Jungle Book. In 1831, in the village of Satbavadi near Seoni, a child was found who had grown up among wolves — a story documented by Sir William Henry Sliman, and one that later shaped Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli. The Vainganga River, the valley where Sher Khan fell, the ranges of Kannivara and Sivani — all of them lie here.

THE EXPERIENCE
A day in the wild
Dawn
Morning safari
At first light you head into Touria or Teliya gate in an open gypsy. Alarm calls rise from the langurs, pugmarks track across the dust, and your naturalist reads every sign the forest offers. Mobiles stay behind — this is the old way of watching.
Midday
Rest and recharge
Return to the lodge as the heat builds. A slow meal, shade, and the low hum of the forest pressing in. Metal water bottles are the rule here — plastic doesn't belong in the jungle.
Afternoon
Evening safari
The second drive starts as the heat breaks. Tigers come to the water. Leopards — sometimes the black one — begin their patrols. In the last hour before dusk, the light turns gold and the forest opens up.
Night
Under the stars
Dinner under open sky. Share sightings, trade stories, and listen to what the jungle says after dark. As they say here — the tiger has seen you many times before you see it.
